Since 2010, David has worked to develop methods of infusing live performance with the element of scent. This is both easier, and not as easy, as it sounds. He has designed scent effects ranging from ambient room scents to timed bursts, in works of theatre, dance, and live art.
Smell can subtly inform or enhance a spectator's sense of place and emotional subtext. Alternately, an artist might want to add a "visual" colour or texture to a moment in time.
Raw materials, ranging from wild-crafted absolutes to commercial readymades. For certain low-intensity applications, aroma can be extracted through simple decoction. These materials are blended into "moments" or "cues."
Low-tech equipment, often hand-operated to coincide with the peculiar timing of each scent in each space, is used to diffuse the smell through the room.
